WHY ME? THE HOW'S & WHYS OF STRESS & ANXIETY
Congratulations about turning up here and delving deeper!
SO WHAT IS STRESS & ANXIETY?
The words “stress” and “anxiety” are often used interchangeably, but bear different meanings in medical terms. Stress is caused by particular situations or events in one’s life that makes one feel frustrated, angry, worried or even anxious. The stress response is different for each individual such that the same event can often illicit disparate responses. For example:
• Public speaking excites some but terrifies others;
• Pressure from deadlines increases productivity in some but renders others paralyzed;
• Difficult circumstances in family or friend settings find some eager to take control and others stricken with panic;
• Social situations requiring people to voice their opinions are easy and comfortable for some but stressful for others;
• Changes in the work environment are welcomed by some but not by others.
Stress inhibits the body’s natural healing abilities and tightens the body unevenly, resulting in physical imbalances. If we find it challenging to ‘switch-off’ from this way of being, our (sympathetic) nervous system to be on overdrive and we generate feelings of overwhelm.
, on the other hand, is a general feeling of apprehension or fear, the source of which is not clearly defined:
• Generalized anxiety – pattern of frequent, constant worry and anxiety over many different activities and events);
• Specific phobia
• Obsessive compulsive disorder
is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviours that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions). Often the person carries out the behaviours to get rid of the obsessive thoughts, but this only provides temporary relief (not performing the obsessive rituals can cause great anxiety);
• Social Phobia
persistent fear of situations that may involve scrutiny or judgment by others, such as parties and other social events.
Those suffering from anxiety disorders display such symptoms on a regular basis and thus have difficulty with daily activities and relationships.
WHAT IS THE STRESS RESPONSE?
If your mind interprets a stressful event as an emergency threat, it triggers the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Your stress response kicks in and activates the
sympathetic nervous system (SNS)
. Your body is flooded with hormones like
cortisol and norepinephrine
(produced by brain and neurotransmitter)/
(produced in adrenal cortex). These heighten the senses, increase heart rate and blood pressure, and focus the brain’s activity.
The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS),
is responsible for physical relaxation and emotional calm, (aka rest/digest branch) becomes overwhelmed by this sympathetic response. The SNS predominates and the PNS overwhelmed, this generates responses such as anger/irritability,
, and aggression.
The primal reaction of fight-or-flight / freeze response enabled our ancestors to effectively fight off or flee from life-threatening danger. An important survival mechanism useful when you need to run away from an attacker (saber tooth tiger). But it’s this response is too much for most of the day to day conflicts we experience.
Short-term positive effects
• a quick burst of energy
• decreased sensitivity to pain
• increase in immunity
• heightened memory.
means that cortisol builds up and creates a number of stress-related health problems. Long-term negative effects:
• imbalances of blood sugar
• increase in abdominal fat storage
• suppressed thyroid activity
• decreased bone density
• decreased muscle mass
• high blood pressure
• lowered immunity
• less able to think clearly.
