Myofascial Release Therapy
A Gentle Approach To Pain & Posture
Why Does Fascia Matter?
- It litterally
holds us together
- New research is illustrating just how important fascia is in relation to the
healthy use of our body
- The fascial system requires
, not just in terms of drinking water - but unsticking with myofascial techniques & restorative & yin yoga
- A model of
- meaning tension + integrity = tensegrity. In other words
our bones form the compression bearing “struts” and the fascia maintain the tension, this allows the bones to “float” in the fascia
What Can Myofascial Release Help With?
+ Stress & anxiety
+ Chronic Fatigue & fibromyalgia
+ Poor posture & general muscle soreness
+ Carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow
+ Pain & inflammation - injuries, bursitis, shoulder pain
+ Scar tissue
+ Women’s health - cesarean section, prolapse, hysterectomy, scar tissue,
fertility issues, menstruation, pelvic/abdominal pain
Fascia Is Designed To Support What We Are Doing In Our Bodies
What Is Fascia?
We are Fascia! Fascia is a 3-dimensional connective tissue that spreads throughout the body in an interconnected web. It interfaces with every muscle, nerve, blood vessel, organ and bone in the body. Fascia is made up of collagen and elastin fibers supported in a gelatinous matrix that infuses muscles down to the cellular level. It runs from the top of our heads down to the tips of our toes. It plays a part in metabolism, has a stabilising and shock absorbing function, directly interfacing with our musculoskeletal system. It is made up nearly a third of our body's fluid, fascia separates and connects the body parts. It is a sense organ; a system of body awareness or proproception. Fascia protects tissues offer support from damage and allows remodeling after an injury.
Fascia is affected by stress, trauma, (physical or emotional), poor posture, inflammation, induced muscular tension or inflammation - this creates tension in the fascia causing it to harden locally. Due to the fact that it is essentially an interconnected web, this hardened soft tissue pulls into other areas of the body, much like when you pull threads on a sweater causing all the other threads to organize along ‘lines’ of tension. This means for example that lower back issues can be caused somewhere else in the body and producing pain in the lower back. Such restrictions can create pain and compensatory patterns in the body and in turn help to create poor posture.
Restriction & Tension
Restrictions in the fascia can cause symptoms such as pain, tingling, or burning as fascia can bind to nerves and blood vessels. And in turn can result in reduced flexibility and mobility. Over time such ‘stress’ can further compromise body systems, this is why fascia has such a big impact on our entire health.
Myofascial Release, like many holistic modalities, champions the philosophy that the mind and body are connected and the importance of viewing an individual as a whole rather than only looking at a physical ailment or just emotional issue. The body has the ability to remember postural positions, actions and emotions without the brain reminding it to do so. Throughout the body’s fascial system flow microscopic cells containing energy which have the ability to retain memory. Sometimes memories can become locked into the fascial system and manifest themselves in physical pain (you can read more about this here). MFR offers a gentle and safe approach to addressing physical and emotional components of an injury.

What a find - Nicki and Myofascial Release! After years of pain in my back, hips and legs to varying degrees and having tried so many techniques to find relief, Nicki has worked magic. Her knowledge of the body and it's workings, her ability to listen and then feel her way through to releasing the issues is outstanding. She does it in such a warm and calm way making me feel completely relaxed, not just on completion of a session but for several days after. I have no hesitation in telling everyone about the miracle that is Nicki"
I have struggled with chronic knee issues including arthritis for many years, following ruptures and subsequent operations on my cruciate and collateral ligaments.About 4 months ago I was really suffering from knee pain, I was limping very badly; the pain was severely restricting my mobility and ability to sleep.
Nicki did 3 treatments on my knee. I didn't know anything about MFR, but during the 1st treatment I could feel lots of tingling in my knee. There was definitely something happening in the treatment. Nicki was also very gentle, caring and conscientious and asked me to describe what I was feeling throughout the treatment.
The following day after the first treatment my knee was significantly less painful and less inflamed. It got progressively got less painful over the following days. Nicki also made suggestions as to how I could manage my knee to improved my sleep which was a very welcome relief. She also gave me some homeopathic remedies to help.
Four months on, and despite returning to using pretty heavy weights at the gym, I have had no problems with my knee and it is feeling really good. I can wholeheartly recommend MFR treatments with Nicki and I would urge anyone who needs body work to seek her out. Thank you Nicki for making a difference to my life.

FREEDOM FOR THE SHOULDERS: Sunday 31st May, Yoga Bodhi, Bath
Carry the weight of the world on your shoulders? The shoulders and neck can be a 'hot spot' for holding tension, especially if we spend a lot of time sitting at a desk, driving a car, spending times on our 'screens', and extended periods of nursing and carrying little ones. Even if you don't spend a lot of time sitting, shoulders can feel like they magnetise tension! Such stress and tension patterns cause restriction and a sense of hinderance of movement / mobility.
This workshop will give you the opportunity to explore through the direct experience of interoception, delving into your inner landscape areas of tension.Using therapy balls you will be guided to roll and release fascial tissue and you will restore using sublime restorative and/or yin poses.
SELF MYOFASCIAL RELEASE & RESTORATIVE YOGA: Sunday 6th September, Bristol City Yoga, Bristol
Do you feel that your body could do with a bit of ‘oiling’, or feel that you always have tight hamstrings? These experiences are examples of fascial restriction. Such restrictions in the fascia or connective tissue, affects our flexibility and mobility. The fascia surrounds and encases bone, muscles, arteries, veins joints, and organs. This 3D webbing creates protection, support and structure in the body. It can get 'bound down' (or restricted) from stress, injuries.
This workshop will give you the opportunity to explore body and also explore self myofascial release using hands-on and also using therapy balls. You will be guided to roll, release and restore your fascial tissue.
As an experienced osteopath I really appreciated Nic’s 2 hour shoulder workshop where she could comprehensively take us through myofascial release methods for the many structures which affect the shoulders. These are techniques that people can take away with them and continue to work with at home - I would predict many people having quite amazing results. I certainly felt more freedom not just in my shoulders but through my whole body. I will definitely be going back for more - this is fascinating and effective work.
Who would have thought that rolling a couple of balls under your shoulders, down your back & across your neckcould offer such a release; I’ve just attended Nic’s Roll & Release workshop for the shoulders and neck. It was an amazing 2 hours, learning about how the network of fascia connects throughout the whole body and theimportance of keeping it hydrated and in good order to help relieve those niggles & any long-standing pain we have. The techniques are easy to learn & then all you need to do is carry a couple of the balls in your bag for instance relief whenever & wherever you are. My shoulders feel free & incredible today. I would definitely recommend this workshop, Nic is extremely knowledge and able to incorporate the techniques alongside yin yoga postures, a relaxing, informative and worthwhile workshop. Thank you.
